What Is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is a set of exercises that retrain the muscles of your child’s face, mouth, and tongue. It’s like physical therapy, but for the mouth. The goal is to help those muscles work the way they’re supposed to.
Our mouths aren’t just for eating and talking. The way our tongue rests, the way we swallow, and even the way we breathe all affect how our teeth grow and line up. When something’s off, it can cause problems that look like they’re about teeth, but they’re really about muscle function.
Signs Your Child Might Benefit
So how do you know if this is something to look into? Here are a few signs we see a lot at Dazzling Dentistry:
- Mouth breathing: If your child breathes through their mouth most of the time, even when they’re not congested, that’s a red flag. The tongue should rest against the roof of the mouth. When it doesn’t, the jaw can develop differently.
- A tongue thrust: Watch your child swallow. Does their tongue push forward against their teeth? That’s called a tongue thrust, and it can push teeth out of alignment over time.
- Snoring or restless sleep: If your child snores or seems tired even after a full night’s sleep, their airway might be partially blocked. Often, that’s related to tongue position.
- Crooked teeth or a narrow palate: Sometimes what looks like a need for braces is really a need for muscle retraining first. If the tongue isn’t resting in the right spot, the upper jaw doesn’t widen the way it should.
Why This Matters for Your Child’s Smile
Braces straighten teeth. But they don’t always fix the underlying muscle habits that caused the crowding in the first place. You can push teeth into alignment, but if the tongue keeps pressing against them from the wrong direction, they might shift right back. Myofunctional therapy addresses that root issue before or during orthodontic treatment.
The result is often straighter teeth that stay straighter. Better breathing. Better sleep. And a smile that looks natural because the whole system works together.
What Does Therapy Actually Look Like?
If your child starts myofunctional therapy at Dazzling Dentistry, it won’t look like a typical dental visit. There’s no drilling. No shots. No scary instruments.
Instead, your child will work with us on simple exercises. Things like learning to rest their tongue on the roof of their mouth. Practicing proper swallowing patterns. Strengthening the muscles around their lips and cheeks.
The exercises are simple. They take just a few minutes a day. And kids usually enjoy them because they feel like fun little challenges rather than “work.”
Depending on your child’s needs, therapy might last a few months or longer. We’ll track progress and adjust as we go.
Is It Really Necessary?
Not every child needs myofunctional therapy. But for the ones who do? It can be life-changing.
We’ve seen kids stop snoring. We’ve seen kids who were heading toward extractions avoid them entirely. We’ve seen kids who hated their smile finally feel confident. The earlier we catch these issues, the easier they are to treat. Young mouths are still growing. That means we can guide that growth instead of fighting against it later.
