The Chicago Patient’s Guide to Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

You visited your dentist because you have a cracked tooth, a large cavity a filling can’t fix, or you just finished a root canal and need protection. They take a look and mention two options: a same-day crown or a traditional crown. Both will restore your tooth and look and work like a natural tooth. So what’s the difference, and which one is right for you?

At Dazzling Dentistry in Chicago and Arlington Heights, Dr. Margaret Radziszewski and Dr. Weronika Dabros offer both options. Together, they’ve placed thousands of crowns in Chicago and Arlington Heights. They’ve seen firsthand how choosing same-day vs. traditional can affect your schedule, comfort, and results. Here’s what you need to know.

CEREC One-visit dentistry

What Is a Traditional Crown?

A traditional crown has been the standard for decades. It’s a two-visit process.

The First Visit

Your dentist numbs the area and prepares your tooth. That means removing any decay and shaping the tooth to make room for the crown. Then they take an impression of your tooth.

In the past, that impression meant a tray filled with goopy material. You’d bite down and wait for it to set. Many patients found it uncomfortable or even gag-inducing. Today, many offices use digital scanners instead. They’re faster and much more comfortable.

After taking the impression, your dentist places a temporary crown. This protects your tooth while your dentist makes the permanent crown.

The Waiting Period

Your impression goes to a dental lab. Skilled technicians use it to craft your custom crown. They match the color, shape, and size to your surrounding teeth. This process typically takes two to three weeks.

During that time, you wear the temporary crown. It’s functional, but it’s not perfect. It might feel slightly off, or it might even come loose. You have to be careful about what you eat. Sticky foods can pull it off, and hard foods can crack it.

The Second Visit

When your permanent crown is ready, you return to the office. Your dentist removes the temporary crown and checks the new one’s fit. They adjust your bite if needed. Then they cement the crown in place permanently. You leave with a fully restored tooth.

What Is a Same-Day Crown?

A same-day crown uses CAD/CAM technology, which stands for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. The most common system is called CEREC.

Here’s how it works.

The Same-day Crown Process

Your dentist numbs the area and prepares your tooth, then uses a digital scanner instead of a physical impression. A small wand captures thousands of images of your tooth. In minutes, you have a precise 3D model on the screen.

Then your dentist designs your crown using specialized software. They match the color, shape, and size to your natural teeth. You can see the design on the screen before they make anything.

Once the design is ready, the data goes to an in-office milling machine. This machine carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic. It takes about 15-20 minutes.

When the crown is ready, your dentist checks the fit, makes any adjustments, and cements it in place. You leave with a permanent crown.

The Key Differences

Let’s compare the two options side by side.

Factor Traditional Crown Same-Day Crown
Visits Required Two One
Time to Final Crown Two to three weeks Same day
Temporary Crown Required Not needed
Impressions Digital or traditional Digital only
Lab Work Outside lab In-office milling
Numbing Injections Two One

Both options produce high-quality, durable crowns. The difference is in the experience and the timeline.

Why Patients Choose Same-Day Crowns

At Dazzling Dentistry, many patients opt for same-day crowns. Here’s why:

  • Convenience: Life is busy. Taking time off work for two dental appointments is hard. Same-day crowns let you get everything done in one visit. You walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a permanent crown.
  • No Temporary Crown: Temporary crowns are fragile. They can crack, come loose, or fall off at the worst possible moment. They also don’t fit as well as a permanent crown. That can cause sensitivity or irritation. With same-day crowns, you skip the temporary entirely.
  • Fewer Injections: With traditional crowns, you get numbed twice. Once for the prep and once for the final placement. With same-day crowns, you only need one injection.
  • Better Fit: Digital impressions are more accurate than traditional putty impressions. There’s less room for error and less distortion. The result is a more precise fit.

Dr. Radziszewski has invested in this technology because she believes it benefits patients. “Same-day crowns aren’t just faster,” she says. “They’re often better. The fit is more precise, and the patient doesn’t have to deal with a temporary crown for weeks.”

When Traditional Crowns Might Be Better

Same-day crowns aren’t right for every situation. Sometimes, a traditional crown is the better choice during:

  • Complex Cases: If your case involves multiple teeth, a dental bridge, or an implant, you may need a traditional lab. These restorations require specialized techniques that go beyond what a chairside milling machine can produce.
  • Cosmetic Cases with Special Shading: If you need a crown on a front tooth and want a very specific shade or translucency, you may need a skilled ceramist. They can layer porcelain in ways that a milling machine cannot replicate.
  • Your Dentist’s Recommendation: Every patient is different. Dr. Radziszewski or Dr. Dabros will evaluate your situation and recommend the best option. They’ll explain the pros and cons of each approach and help you make an informed decision.

Dr. Dabros, who trained at the Bioclear Learning Center in Seattle, notes that “the best crown is the one that fits your tooth, your bite, and your lifestyle. Sometimes that’s a same-day crown. Sometimes it’s a traditional one. The key is choosing the right option for the right situation.”
