If you’re a parent, you’ve probably had the tooth-brushing battle more times than you can count. You’ve begged, bribed, and maybe even threatened to get your child to brush properly. And still, you worry about cavities. Here’s something that might take a little weight off your shoulders: dental sealants.
They’re one of the simplest, most effective things we can do to protect your child’s teeth. And they work so well that some adults get them too.

What Is a Dental Sealant?
Think of a sealant like a tiny raincoat for your child’s tooth. It’s a thin, protective coating that we paint onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, the molars and premolars. Those back teeth have deep grooves and tiny pits where food and bacteria love to hide. Even with good brushing, it’s tough to get all the way into those crevices. A toothbrush bristle is actually too big to reach the bottom of some of those grooves.
Sealants fill in those grooves. They create a smooth, flat surface that’s way easier to keep clean. And they act as a barrier, keeping cavity-causing bacteria away from the enamel.
The Process Is Quick and Painless
Getting sealants doesn’t involve any drilling or numbing. There are no needles involved. Your child won’t feel a thing.
We start by cleaning the tooth thoroughly. Then we apply a special gel that roughens the surface just a little; this helps the sealant bond properly. We rinse that off, dry the tooth, and paint on the sealant material. Finally, we use a special curing light to harden it in place.
The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth. And your child can eat and drink normally right afterward.
When Should Kids Get Them?
The best time to get sealants is right after the permanent molars come in. That’s usually around age six for the first set and age twelve for the second set.
Why wait until then? Because those are the teeth that do most of the heavy chewing. They’re also the ones with the deepest grooves. Protecting them early gives them the best shot at staying cavity-free through the cavity-prone years.
But even if your child is a teenager or young adult, it’s not too late. As long as the teeth haven’t developed cavities yet, sealants can still help.
Do Adults Get Dental Sealants?
Yes, sometimes. It’s less common, but we do recommend them for adults who have deep grooves in their teeth and no existing decay or fillings. If you’re someone who’s prone to cavities or just wants extra protection, sealants might be a good option.
The application is exactly the same as for kids: quick, painless, and effective.
How Long Do They Last?
Sealants are durable. They typically last five to ten years with normal wear. But we’ll check them at every regular visit to make sure they’re still intact. If one chips or wears down, we can easily reapply it.
And even if a sealant does wear off, the tooth underneath hasn’t been damaged at all. It’s not like a filling where you lose tooth structure. The sealant just goes away, and we can put a new one on.
Do Sealants Replace Brushing?
Absolutely not. Sealants are extra protection, not a replacement for good oral hygiene. Your child still needs to brush twice a day, floss daily, and see us for regular checkups.
Think of sealants like a safety net. Brushing and flossing are the main act. Sealants catch what falls through the cracks, literally.
Are They Worth It?
Sealants are one of the best preventive investments you can make. They cost a fraction of what a filling costs. And they save your child the discomfort of getting a cavity drilled.
Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children, usually up to a certain age. And the peace of mind? That’s priceless.
