Healing comfortably after your extraction is just as important as the procedure itself. By following these simple, guided steps, you can protect the extraction site, minimize discomfort, and get back to your routine feeling great.

Your Guide to a Smooth, Comfortable Recovery
Step 1: Manage Bleeding & Protect the Clot (The First 24 Hours)
The most important goal right after your procedure is to form a stable blood clot in the socket. This is your body’s natural bandage, so gentle pressure is key. We’ll place a piece of gauze over the site. Bite down on it with firm, steady pressure for about 45-60 minutes, but don’t chew on it.
If some oozing continues at home, replace the gauze with a new folded piece and apply pressure for another 30-45 minutes. A little pink-tinged saliva is normal for the first day.
Be sure to protect that clot! Avoid spitting, rinsing vigorously, or using a straw for the first 24 hours. The sucking motion can dislodge the clot, leading to a painful condition called “dry socket.”
Step 2: Ease Discomfort & Reduce Swelling
Some swelling and mild discomfort are normal and typically peak within 2-3 days. For the first 24 hours, apply an ice pack or cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the extraction site (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off). This significantly reduces swelling.
Take any prescribed medication as directed. For mild discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (if approved by your doctor) are often effective. Always follow the dosage instructions.
Then take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24-48 hours, as it can increase bleeding and swelling.
Step 3: Gentle Cleaning & Oral Hygiene
Keeping your mouth clean prevents infection, but be extra gentle around the surgical site.
- First 24 Hours: Don’t rinse your mouth. You may brush your other teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction area.
- After 24 Hours: Begin gentle rinsing with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water) after meals and before bed. Don’t swish forcefully either. Just let it flow in your mouth and tilt your head to let it drain. You can also very gently brush near the site with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Step 4: Nourish Your Body with Soft Foods
What you eat plays a big role in your comfort and healing speed. Stick to soft and cool. For the first few days, enjoy nutritious and easy-to-eat foods like:
- Blended soups (let them cool)
- Yogurt, pudding, and applesauce
- Scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and smoothies (eaten with a spoon, no straw!)
Foods and drinks you should avoid include:
- Hot, spicy, or crunchy foods (chips, nuts, seeds) that can irritate the area.
- Alcoholic beverages and caffeinated or carbonated drinks for the first 48-72 hours, as they can interfere with healing.
- Absolutely no smoking or vaping for as long as possible. It severely delays healing and dramatically increases the risk of dry socket and infection.
